THE PROCESS

First, you drop me a line. You say you’ve got a presentation to give – or you say you’d like to pitch a presentation to a conference and need help landing the invitation to speak. Either way, these words trigger a series of questions that make both of us feel confident about our relationship.

We’ll sit down and talk about your mission: What do you want to accomplish with this presentation? What are the stakes? What is the landscape you’re walking into with this story? I’ll ask more questions than is decent. You won’t mind.

We’ll get into the nitty gritty of your story. I’ll come back to you with drafts to review and this collaboration will go on exactly as long as we continue to improve the story. (There is also a scenario where you tell me what story you want to tell, I go off and create it and you are dumbfounded that it could be so awesome with such little personal involvement.)

My design team will get involved and smarten things up with visuals that enhance and clarify the story. We will follow your corporate design guidelines. We will follow the conference rules. Everybody will be pleased.

When the presentation is complete, you may want coaching on your delivery. I can do this and you will enjoy it.

Ideal timeline from kick-off meeting to presentation is eight weeks. Four is manageable but may be painful for all involved. I’m not even going to tell you what will happen if you have less than four weeks before you present. (But you can ask. It’ll be a healthy conversation.)

TESTAMENT

Even before I started working at Microsoft, I'd heard about Joy as the legendary story-teller. In working with her I've found her to be the most talented story-teller I've ever met. Apart from her talents, she's also my fav person in the entire universe to work with - she's kind, caring, warm and gives the best constructive feedback (so rare!)

PURNA VIRJI, SENIOR TRAINING MANAGER, MICROSOFT (currently Principal Consultant, Content Solutions at LinkedIn)

To win the heart and mind of your audience, you need to bring substance and style to your story. Joy combines an innate sense of storytelling with a thorough approach of personification and accurate fact-checking which ensures that the presentation not only sounds well, but also sounds right.

CEDRIC CHAMBAZ, HEAD OF MARKETING EUROPE, MICROSOFT (currently head of international product marketing and strategy at Apple)
